We Can’t Control the Waves, But We Can Learn to Surf

There was a moment in my life that still echoes in my mind today. My husband, Kirk, looked at me and said, “Why do I always get the broken Layne?”

It was a gut-wrenching moment but eye opening moment. I was giving him the most depleted version of myself, someone exhausted from years of pushing through, convinced that success meant sacrificing my well-being.

I had achieved so much on the outside, but on the inside, I felt completely drained.

That moment was a wake-up call. I realised I couldn’t continue running on empty. This realisation marked the turning point for me, as I committed to turning my attention inward and investing in my mental wellbeing.

It took hitting rock bottom to truly understand that mental fitness isn’t something you can simply “switch on” when things get tough. It’s something you must cultivate every single day. It became my focus, my practice, my journey…one I believe is as important as any physical training.

Five Simple Steps to Build Mental Resilience

Tess and I were approached by A Current Affair to explain how we cultivated the tools to thrive, into a simple daily practice.

These practices are the bedrock of our daily routine, helping us stay grounded, calm, and focused. Here’s what we’ve learned and what we share with our community:

  1. Box Breathing

The simplest technique with the most immediate impact. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds. This resets your nervous system and centres your mind.
  2. The ‘I Am’ Mantra

We all have an internal dialogue that shapes our mindset. By choosing a daily mantra, such as “I am calm” or “I am focused,” we take control of our mental narrative and define how we show up each day.
  3. Make Your Bed

The small act of making your bed sets a productive tone for the day. It’s a simple task that gives you a sense of accomplishment and order, which can translate into bigger wins throughout the day.
  4. Hydrate Your Brain

Our brains need water to function at their best. Start the day with a glass of water to jumpstart your body and mind. It’s a small habit that can yield big results in terms of clarity and focus.
  5. Gratitude and Reflection

Take time each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for. It shifts your mindset from scarcity to abundance and brings positive energy into your life.

The Science

I know these practices may seem simple, but they’re grounded in science. Techniques like box breathing and mindfulness aren’t just for yogis, they’re used by high-performance teams across the world, from the military to top corporate leaders. These tools are proven to reduce stress, improve focus, and help you show up as the best version of you, as often as possible.
